If your SEO playbook still looks the way it did three years ago, 2026 is the year to update it. Search hasn't just evolved - the destination itself has changed.

Drawing on what we're seeing across the hundreds of websites we work with, here are the trends genuinely moving the needle this year, and what we'd recommend doing about each.

1. AI answers are the new front page

Google's AI overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity increasingly answer a query directly, before the user ever scrolls to traditional results. For many informational searches, the "click" now happens inside the AI answer. The practical takeaway: ranking on page one is no longer enough - you need to be a source these engines quote. That means clear, well-structured, factually accurate content with strong signals of expertise.

2. Answer Engine and Generative Engine Optimization

Two new disciplines have moved from buzzwords to budget lines. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) structures your content so assistants can surface it as the direct answer. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) makes your content the kind that AI engines cite. In both cases, the winners use schema markup, clear question-and-answer formatting, and content that's easy for a machine to extract.

3. E-E-A-T is non-negotiable

Google's emphasis on Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust keeps growing - especially since AI makes thin content cheap to produce. Real author credentials, first-hand experience, original data and genuine reviews now separate content that ranks from content that disappears. Generic, AI-spun articles with no expertise behind them are being filtered out.

4. Helpful, intent-matched content wins

The "helpful content" direction rewards pages that fully answer what a person actually wants - not pages stuffed with keywords. Mapping content to real search intent, and covering a topic in genuine depth, consistently outperforms volume-led publishing.

5. Technical health still matters

Fast, crawlable, mobile-first sites remain the foundation. No amount of clever content rescues a slow, broken site - and as AI crawlers join search crawlers, clean structure matters more than ever.

What to do now

Audit how AI engines currently represent your brand, tighten your schema, invest in genuinely expert content, and keep your technical foundations clean. The businesses that adapt early to AI-driven search will own the visibility their competitors are still chasing.
